This paper presents the findings of a study of an engineering education project funded by the National Science Foundation. Its purpose was to find out the effects of participating in international experiences on a group of engineering graduate students. A mixed method approach was used. Data were collected using surveys and interview. The results show that the students developed global competency because they learned how to work with people who define and solve problems in different ways, learned about the host culture norms and language, and learned about the importance of including a social aspect in their work. In addition, they developed an awareness of the importance of developing collaborative partnerships.
