ABSTRACT
This quantitative study’s purpose is to develop, validate, and administer a psychometrically-sound survey instrument, “Conditions for Black Male Success in STEM Survey” [CBMSSS] that describes the experiences of black males majoring in STEM disciplines. The instrument assesses the relationship of the identified constructs and black male performance in STEM. A Four–Factor Hybrid Model which capitalized on the strengths of two theoretical frameworks is used, one from Jolly, E., et.al. (2004) and the other from Boykin, & Noguera, (2011). The four factors of the Hybrid Model are: engagement, capacity, continuity and guiding functions. Using a national sample, the Hybrid Model predicted 23% of the variance in black male mathematics achievement. Future CBMSSS development and uses are discussed.
