Does the Type of Parental Involvement That Predicts Success Vary Across Countries? Findings From PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2012

Abstract

Parents play an important role in their children’s schooling, and studies in the U.S. have generally found that involved parents have at least somewhat more successful students. Is this a universal relationship, or does the kind of parental involvement associated with better learning vary across countries? This study uses PISA 2012 data to cross-culturally examine three different types of parental involvement: home and school-based involvement, as well as educational spending. Our findings support the idea that regardless of culture, parental involvement can benefit children’s education. We found different patterns of parental involvement in East Asian and European countries that predict academic success, suggesting that cultural differences exist in the ways parents can help their students succeed in school.
