Get Off That Cell Phone When Completing My Survey: Exploring Respondent Burden and Data Quality by Device Type

Abstract

With the growing reliance on tablets and smartphones for internet access, understanding the effects of completion device on online survey responses becomes increasing important. This study uses data from the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP), a multi-institution online alumni survey designed to obtain knowledge about arts education, to explore how the type of device a respondent uses affects his/her responses. The type of devices that respondents use does seem to influence how they respond to the survey, specifically regarding survey completion, time spent responding, straight-lining responses, and patterns in switching between types of devices. For those who quit before completing the survey, patterns in place of abandonment were also explored.
