Pragmatic Perspectives on Algorithms for Item Selection in Parallel Tests Assembly

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

Test construction is an intensive labor process, time consuming and expensive. Innovative methods for assisting the test construction are always desired. Parallel tests assembly is a task on selecting items to construct multiple test forms in which the composition of each form has approximately equivalent characteristics. This study proposed a new method, based on a matching process, for automated parallel tests assembly. Various interpretations of equivalency among test forms were compared from a testing service organization’s perspective to reveal the practicality. Simulations were used to show the merit of different item selection algorithms. The implication underlying the algorithms was discussed. The results demonstrated the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed methods for use in operational environments.
