Cross-Racial and Economic Inequities Among Schools and Student Subgroups Identified by Erasure Analysis

Fri, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

One of the aims specified by the ESEA Blueprint for Reform is to improve the educational achievement of low-performing students, which has encouraged educators, researchers, and policy makers to address achievement gaps and the relationships among school and student variables with these gaps. This paper investigates the size of the achievement gap among schools and among student groups before and after monitoring (a policy instituted after the discovery of irregular student response patterns) school performance. In addition, we examined the probabilities of the each of the student subgroups characterized by gender, race, and financial situation attending schools with different levels of erasure in state tests. This paper also depicts how student demographics were associated with the school erasure status.
