Student-Athlete Perceptions of Social Media Training: The Need to Educate During the Digital Age

Fri, April 17, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

Student-athlete development programs have garnered enhanced attention as the college athlete experience continues to be criticized (Bell, 2011; Navarro, 2012). Today the commercialization of college sport continues to grow (Croissant, 2001). However, no research to date has examined student-athlete perspectives on how social media use influences the college student-athlete experience and identity development. In turn, this research explores how NCAA Division I and Division III student-athletes perceive formal social media training. Focus groups will be conducted during September/October of 2014. Ultimately, this study will serve as a pilot study to provide a foundational understanding of best practices for social media training for NCAA member institutions.
