A school-based project on second language students’ academic learning across the curriculum that involved schoolteachers from different subjects and academics was developed with the aim of enhancing the role of teachers as critical agents of change toward a more culturally relevant pedagogy in second language education. It took place in the school year of 2013/14 and explicitly took the issues of bi/plurilingualism and social justice as foci of pedagogical inquiry. Data was collected through questionnaires, classroom observation, field notes and document analysis. The results evidence a need for a more critical analysis of the sociolinguistic and educational situation of bi/plurilingual students in Portugal, so that pedagogy can be more culturally and linguistically responsive, as well as teacher education.
