In an attempt to address the demographic divide between teachers and students in our public schools and the need for culturally relevant pedagogy, this paper presents the voices of six new urban teachers of color. These teachers speak to their successes and challenges developing and enacting culturally relevant pedagogy as they begin their careers. They discuss the urgency and importance of their work and the struggles they encounter working alongside predominantly white colleagues. Their voices express the need for support and mentorship of new teachers in urban schools and the importance of critical frameworks in transforming the educational opportunities available for youth and the monolithic discourse around achievement in educational research.
