Rasch Calibration: Reform-Oriented Teaching Practices

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Marriott, Floor: Tenth Level, O'Hare

Abstract

This study is aimed at developing and calibrating “Reform-oriented Teaching Practices” (RTP) scale using the Rasch model. This scale was adapted from the 2012 National Survey of Science and Mathematics Education survey. A total of 3701 science teachers from 1,403 schools across the U.S. responded to this survey. The results revealed a good model-data fit that supports the measurement of RTP in science teachers as a unidimensional construct. The five-point rating scale functioned well. Item and person parameters have an appropriate coverage with great variability. The results demonstrate how the Rasch model provides an alternative way for the validity on RTP scale use and thus could serve as a promising approach for addressing measurement issues for the rating scale.
