Gatekeeping in social work education is increasingly being impacted by the rapid growth of distance learning and online programs. This study examined gatekeeping in traditional and online/hybrid programs through a nationwide survey. This study documented that social work educators’ expectation of gatekeeping remains high even in the context of growing online and hybrid social work programs, especially in the areas of ethical and personal suitability. Findings showed a large discrepancy between what was important to faculty and what was actually emphasized in traditional and online/hybrid programs regarding gatekeeping. This study suggests that social work educators need to pay particular attention to the technological and pedagogical shifts related to the uneven gatekeeping practices in different delivery formats.
