Video Versus Flash Cards: Examination of Vocabulary Knowledge Acquisition and Retention

Abstract

This session features an online initiative started by an avid filmmaker that invites students to create short videos that educate and entertain viewers about specific topics. This encourages students to bring their talents in the arts and media to topics in English. The key study objective was to determine whether, and to what degree, the student-created videos are more effective in teaching vocabulary than other traditional means, such as flashcards. Results show that both approaches may be comparable in helping students acquire vocabulary knowledge, however, they differ in the extent to which they engage students in their learning and help retain their newly acquired knowledge.
