Abstract algebra is a common course in secondary mathematics teacher preparation programs across the United States. Yet it has a reputation as a stumbling block for pre-service teachers (PSTs), not as an essential learning opportunity. This study gathers the perspectives of abstract algebra instructors and PSTs from three universities about how they relate abstract algebra to future teaching practice. Many instructors saw connections in the topics they were teaching, and some saw connections with how they were teaching. PSTs showed great variation in their perspectives; some saw abstract algebra as fundamental to their preparation, while for others the course had little to no perceived impact on their future teaching.
