Measuring "Success" in Leading School Improvement: Survey Validation in the International Successful School Principalship Project

Abstract

This paper examines the development of school-level surveys (i.e., principal, teacher) as a common valid and reliable instrument for use in the International Successful School Principalship Project and for measuring success in leading school improvement internationally. Content validity was established by content experts from 7 countries. Surveys were piloted in English to teachers (N = 381) and principal surveys (N = 165) in 4 countries. Construct validity was assessed by a principal components exploratory factor and Monte Carlo parallel analysis combined with the evidence for reliability. Results indicate the educational utility of the ISSPP instrument as a valid new international tool for measuring organizational behavior and the effectiveness of leadership practices in leading school improvement.
