Abstract

This paper identifies and examines extra-curricular activities and opportunities available to Black students attending U.S. Black Catholic schools from 1950-1971. By examining a Black Catholic school with an 85 year history in Central Louisiana, this paper shows Black Catholic schools provided students with well-rounded curriculums that extended well beyond the Catholic catechism. Besides the historical contribution to the histories of African American and Catholic education, this research promises to illuminate current Catholic school efforts in urban areas such as the Cristo Rey network and the Jubilee Schools in Memphis.
