Echándole Ganas: An Urban School's Effort to Engage Latino Parents

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

This study explored how the structures and strategies at one start-up middle school Charter School, Ganas Charter School, influenced the experiences, attitudes, and levels of engagement for Latino parents. This study was conducted as a mixed methods case study using a partially mixed sequential dominant status design (Leech & Onwuegbuzie, 2009). Data consisted of observations, interviews, examination of documents and pre-existing survey results that were collected during the inaugural year of the school. The analysis was completed using an a priori coding frame based on the literature that contextualized the study. Findings indicate that access, communication, actions and expectations, and barriers inhibited or promoted parent engagement at Ganas.
