At the same time that Reflective Practice (RP) is growing in significance in educational practice and research, a plethora of meanings have been attached to the construct. In the teacher education literature, Schon’s (1983) distinction between reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action has received considerable attention. However, such a distinction has come under scrutiny on phenomenological and ontological grounds (see Dohn, 2011) . This paper proposes a paradigm shift in researching and teaching RP with a study of reflective discourse (RD). RD is a socially distributed reflective process taking place in discourse between teachers and students. Five minutes of transcribed “Reflective Practice Mentoring" discourse is analyzed to show how RD allows students to adopt different narrative stances toward their academic lived-world.
