In this paper, I describe how a historically Black college used its organizational identity in strategic planning to create a strategic balance (Deephouse, 1999) of maintaining the longevity of its identity as a historically Black college while simultaneously making necessary adjustments to climb out of severe fiscal debt and reverse an accreditation revocation. Uniquely, the president of the institution did not overemphasize consultation of the large mass of critiques and suggestions for HBCU survival in extant literature. Instead, he focused on the rich information and resources residing within the walls and surrounding community of the institution for which he worked.
