Huakina Mai: Relational-Based Intervention, a School-Wide Trial

Abstract

Given the theme “Towards Justice: culture, language and heritage in education research and Praxis” we present the first stage of a nationwide initiative as an exemplar of the development of a whole school behavioural intervention by Māori for Māori with the potential to transform educational success and opportunities. This paper reports on the initial stages of a school wide trial of the Ministry of Education project ‘Huakina mai’. The early data reports primarily on the acquisition of teacher professional learning and the evidence of shifts in teacher practice from a deficit view of behaviour to a social learning approach. Classroom observations and qualitative interviews from teachers, schools leaders, family and students demonstrate school wide impact.
