Critical Conversations: Exploring the "Criticalness" of Small-Group Literature Discussions With Black Elementary Males

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Gold Level, Grand CD

Abstract

In this 3-month qualitative study the researchers sought to better understand the nature of critical conversations with 6 second grade Black males. Data collection methods included audio and video recordings of 13 discussion events. Drawing from the Four Dimensions of Critical Literacy framework, it was found that young Black males consistently, over time, addressed issues of equity and social justice. After analysis of the participation structure it was further found that student participants were the primary contributors to discussion events.
