This study is based on the premise that equitable educational opportunities for all students and inclusive school cultures are largely premised on high student engagement. The study is an example of an organic merge between academic and action research and school practices aimed at monitoring and fostering student engagement through non-cognitive assessments and customized interventions. Using data collected by participating schools, the paper examines the link between various aspects of student orientation to school (SOS) and student academic achievement and also distinct SOS patterns emerging in various student groups. The full version of the paper highlights specifics of introducing non-cognitive assessments into evidence-based decision-making and school improvement practices as well as into building district and school Student Information Systems.
