Vocabulary learning is a crucial component for second-language learners in learning a language. Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of motivation and language-learning strategies on language-learning outcomes; however, little research has been conducted in the field of vocabulary learning. The present study used structural equation modeling to examine the relationship of motivation, vocabulary-learning strategies, and vocabulary-knowledge achievement among 243 Chinese first-year high school students. The results show that intrinsic motivation significantly predicts vocabulary knowledge, while extrinsic motivation does not. More importantly, we found that the use of cognitive strategies in learning vocabulary plays a mediating role in the effect of intrinsic motivation on students’ vocabulary learning outcomes.
