In this self-study the erosion of interpersonal and institutional trust is approached through an inquiry into self-trust. Building on the findings of previous self-studies that revealed the importance of self-trust in relational conceptions of teaching, this study focuses on the interplay of self and others in understanding ourselves as trustworthy. It accomplishes this by connecting self-trust as it operates in teaching/learning relationships, with wider issues of interpersonal and institutional trust. Using teaching and other relevant episodes, it is argued that what we believe, and our attitude towards our past experiences need to be acknowledged as important in our self-narratives if we are to evaluate our trustworthiness.
