Beginning teachers begin the profession with high expectations for their students and themselves as many have the mentality, as they should, that they will change the world as they are confident their ability to teach any student. However, over the course of the first year, that belief begins to diminish as many are simply not just striving to survive the first year but trying to survive each day. Many long for the Christmas break in hopes that a new year will bring renewed strength. This study qualitatively examined the experiences of elementary teachers from a predominantly white university during their first year of teaching after beginning the teacher induction process in a summer enrichment program for urban students.
