Latina/o Teens' College Aspirations, Expectations, and Related Outcomes: The Role of Parental and Teacher Support

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre Second Level, Montreux 1&2

Abstract

Latinos are less likely than White students to enroll in a 4-year college and less likely to attend a selective 4-year college. Many Latino students who begin community college intend to transfer, but few actually do due to a “leaky” pipeline. 756 Latina/o high school students in grades 9-12. ANCOVAs were conducted to examine differences in teacher, family, peer, and counselors support, controlling for academic achievement and SES (grades in math and reading and parental education level). All of these results support that individuals who aspire to go to a 4 year college versus those who aspire to go to a 2 year college have the support system of teachers, family, and peers, that support their higher education goals.
