Teacher Candidate Dispositions: Accountability and Justice

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Professional education prepares individuals to engage in effective practice that promotes judgment to act, as well as the ability to be cognizant of the consequences resulting from such actions (Shulman, 2005). Teacher candidates must be challenged to identify and reflect thoughtfully on their own beliefs in order for significant change to occur and to ensure that they will be effective in transforming the lives of their own students. This study examined the validity and reliability of a 21-item instrument and process of assessment. Findings yielded a single factor with high internal reliability and strong predictive validity of disposition assessment during the program with respect to student performance during student teaching.
