Improving College Readiness With High School Transcript Data: The University of California Transcript Evaluation Service

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Disadvantaged students, even those who are likely to perform well at selective colleges, are much less likely than their more advantaged peers even to apply to college. We study a large scale intervention designed to address this disparity. The Transcript Evaluation Service (TES) gives students and school staff individualized and annual analyses of students’ progress towards completing the specific college preparatory curricula required by the University of California and California State University systems. We show that TES increases completion of these requirements by up to one-third, that outcomes improve more with multiple years of treatment, and that while the treatment improves GPA its main outcome is to increase completion of the college preparatory curriculum.
