Abstract

The introduction of media literacy is a recent occurrence in Singapore and thus, there is an absence of any pedagogical framework to inform the teaching of critical media literacy. This study reports on a survey of how critical media literacy education is conceptualized in curricula and enacted by English teachers in Singapore. These questions would inform the development of a framework for teaching critical media literacy through English. Reporting from a larger study, we focus on findings from a comprehensive analysis of media curricula and the national policies impacting their development from 2000 to the present and an extensive survey of current pedagogical practice in Singapore secondary schools in relation to how media literacy is infused in English lessons.
