This literature review examines empirical research conducted between 2004 and 2014 regarding 1:1 computing technologies, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops, in K-12 educational settings. The review’s overarching research question is: “What does research tell us about how 1:1 technologies are used in K-12 classrooms?” Findings show that the studies selected for analyses primarily concentrated on: cooperative learning practices, the role of these technologies in learner understanding, classroom uses, learner motivation and engagement, and challenges to integrating 1:1 technologies in classrooms. This paper will define each of these categories, describe the implications of the use of technologies on a 1:1 basis in classrooms, and make suggestions for future research.
