In PISA 2009 and 2012, Shanghai stunned the world by its highest math and problem-solving achievement scores. However, little is known about the achievements of Chinese students as a whole, measured by PISA questions. This study employs a large-scale dataset that collected data based on PISA tests and questionnaire from students in China’s five districts. It aims to describe differences of students’ achievements, their motivation, and Opportunity to Learn (OTL) among school districts, location, and types and to examine the effect of these school characteristics and math studies on achievements.
