Effect of Parent Expectations on Postsecondary Enrollment of Students in High- and Low-Incidence Disability Categories

Abstract

Data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 (NLTS2) were used to examine the impact of parent expectations on postsecondary enrollment of students with learning disabilities and students who are deaf or hard of hearing. NLTS2 findings suggest that parents’ expectations for the future help shape the achievements of youth with disabilities, irrespective of the nature of the youth’s disabilities and their levels of functioning. Propensity model analyses, a quasi-experimental method indicated that having a parent who expected the youth to attend postsecondary school increased the odds that students would attend postsecondary school, including 2- or 4-year colleges, and career/technical education schools.
