Peace Education as a Vehicle to School Improvement: A Case Study of One Kenyan School

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

The Curriculum for Peace and Conflict Resolution has been adopted and implemented into over 100 Quaker secondary schools in Kenya in recent years. This case study examines the successful implementation of the peace curriculum in one Kenyan Quaker secondary school. Peace education became the vehicle for school improvement, in addition to the strong leadership skills of the principal. The overall impact of the curriculum implementation is discussed, as well as the specific strategies the school leadership used to transform a struggling school into one with increased academic performance, accountability, and decreased conflicts. In this example, peace education and conflict resolution became a priority in the school culture, and was effectively integrated into all areas of school life and community.
