In 2014, the inaugural Te Puna Wananga (School of Maori Education) Doctor of Education (EdD) was established. This Maori EdD pioneers a new doctoral space for Maori students in Aotearoa. This paper presents an evaluation of the first year of this programme, in particular, we critically reflect on the opportunities such a programme affords Maori students. This paper also discusses the Maori EdD within an international context, as a recent an international member of the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED). Our CPED membership has enabled us to connect with a small group academic staff working with Indigenous students in other EdD programmes. We will also discuss the ways these connections have enriched and strengthened our programme.
