As progressive educational practices have been overrun by a neoliberal agenda, Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) has been replaced in many classrooms and school systems by hyperstandardization and hyperaccountability. As such, a 20 year retrospective on CRP is both timely and necessary. Accordingly, the authors of this paper intend to focus on the development of CRP over the last 20 years and how it has impacted classroom practices. Additionally, we will discuss how hyperaccountability and hyperstandardization have impacted teachers embracing CRP in their classrooms. Using data from one on one interviews and classroom observations we intend to demonstrate how CRP has been marginalized as have those who embraced it.
