Got Game? A Choice-Based Learning Assessment of Data Visualization Skills

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, Sheffield

Abstract

In partnership with several informal and formal learning institutions, we have been building a suite of online games, called choicelets, to serve as interactive assessments of “21st century” learning skills, such as critical thinking. The games take a process-based view of learning and focus on students’ choices as they attempt to solve challenges. The system provides students with various learning resources, and then tracks what, when, and how they choose to learn. This paper briefly describes a choicelet, called Vizlet, which focuses on the skill of data visualization and communication. It also reports on a pilot study of the game with 10th grade biology students, and discusses future work for choice-based assessments.
