Hope and Personality as Success Factors in Vocational Training?

Abstract

Personality and hope may be positively related to performance in vocational education. The present quantitative survey study investigated how personality and hope are related to success in vocational education and training (VET). The sample consisted of 394 trainees of the dual commercial VET from the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Results indicated that adding the hope subscales to the personality dimensions increases the explained variance of success from 11% to 20% for the company grade and from 11% to 30% for the school grade. Findings encourage the use of the construct hope in vocational training. Hope is a psychological resource that can be fostered through proven interventions, thus practice can promote hope and potentially impact the success in VET.
