From School to Community: Empowering Students as Active Citizens in Turkish Context

Abstract

This study is part of a European Union project which aimed at developing students’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to participate actively in democratic life. The current study described the problems identified by students regarding democracy and human rights issues in their community; the strategies developed by them to solve these problems; and the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values developed by them throughout the project. The study utilized multiple case design. The sample involved totally 84 eight-grade students and 3 social studies teachers from three different schools. Having collected through document analysis, analysis of materials developed by the students, observation, formative evaluation forms, teacher interviews, student focus group interviews, and project evaluation activities, the data were analyzed by content analysis.
