Competencies in self-regulated learning (SRL) are regarded as generic prerequisites for success in studying and are additionally considered a distinguished goal of higher education. Even though this seems to be consensual, there are many open issues in this context. By using a sequential multi-method design (semi-structured interviews and online questionnaires) we aimed to identify and evaluate situations in different fields of study for which SRL is necessary. In addition, we investigated the fit of SRL-strategies in different situations in order to find out whether the situations differ with respect to suitable strategies. The findings could contribute to the development of new instruments for the assessment of SRL-competencies.
