The paper reports the findings of a knowledge exchange project funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), its implications for research-informed practices in schools and the roles played in this by universities. The project was framed by a ‘research-in-use’ agenda in which the accumulated academic knowledge is transferred to school work settings through inquiry-led professional learning and development activities. ‘Knowledge transfer and exchange’ partnerships between schools and universities in which the value of personal practical knowledge held by schools was also acknowledged, enabled a sustained participatory approach, in the form of meetings, workshops and school leader led inquiries, to co-produce, documents and disseminate new, bespoke knowledge about effective leadership for learning in urban schools.
