Collaborative and Participatory Methodologies: Te Horana o te Kururangi (the Entangled Kumara Vine)

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 10:15am, Marriott, Floor: Sixth Level, Lincolnshire

Abstract

The thesis for my Doctorate emanated from my work as a teacher; that for Maori (indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand), there are motivations that are particular to Maori that assist in striving to achieve goals set. I believe it would be advantageous to gain a greater understanding of these motivations, from not only a Maori perspective but more specifically drawing on the perceptions of my tribe, namely, Tuhoe around this notion. The methodology applied in this study was drawn from a local proverb (whakatauki) that refers to the valued connections people have to each other. This concept is used as a means to support and create collaboration and participation throughout the research phase. This paper will describe this methodology.
