An alarming number of students are victims of abuse or neglect, placing them at risk for academic and behavioral problems in school. One explanation for the poor school functioning of these youth is that the mental health problems associated with maltreatment impede the formation of developmental assets such as school engagement and future orientation. This paper explores developmental assets as a pathway between mental health problems and school functioning for adolescent girls with histories of maltreatment. Results show that school engagement mediates the relationship between mental health (depression and PTSD) and behavioral problems. It also mediates the relationship between depression and achievement. School based interventions that promote the school engagement and mental health of child welfare involved youth are recommended.
