Educator Efficacy in Southern Belize

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This study examined efficacy of educators in southern Belize who prepare students for national examinations. The instrument used was customized for the population studied and the reliability (internal consistency) was .86 when applied. The instrument included items pertinent to in-school issues of academics, influence and climate as well as external factors relating to resources and community relations. There were differences in efficacy scores for educators preparing students for high-stakes and low-stakes examination. Statistically significant correlations were observed for efficacy with management, school locations and educator roles. This study adds to a rather meager existing body of literature specific to Belize and has the potential to influence human capital distribution and to inform future policy and practice.
