Knight v. State of Alabama and Its Impact on Public Historically Black Colleges and Universities: A 20-Year Retrospective

Abstract

Numerous federal and state lawsuits have called attention to the challenges of funding public historically black colleges and universities as part of the state system of higher education. One example is Knight v. State of Alabama, a federal lawsuit filed in 1981. The poster presents the results of a study which analyzed the impact of the Knight case on the two four-year HBCUs in Alabama two decades after the initial settlement. In particular, the study draws on state and institutional data to consider the change in student demographics, faculty demographics, the composition of degree programs at each institution, and the amount of state funding provided to each institution.
