Abstract

Spatial visualization is an element of human intelligence and an important skill within the study and learning of mathematics highlighted within the Common Core Mathematics Standards. This presentation will provide attendees with an up-close look at the use of "Origami-mathematics" lessons that can be used to strengthen spatial visualization. Data will be presented that summarizes 6 years of research with college-level students taking a course based on this methodology. Additionally, preliminary research will be shared on an extension of this work that involves training K-12 mathematics teacher on this method in the country of Lesotho (located within the country of South Africa).
