Learning progressions (LPs) help learners in achieving a deeper level understanding of science concepts. Sequences built on research are formed to track the processes that the learners go through. This paper aimed to present a systematic review conducted on 35 empirical articles that were published on LPs in science education between 1997 and 2014. Analysis revealed four themes; approaches to learning progressions, development and validation of learning progressions, assessment and learning progressions, and challenges for learning progressions. This systematic review also presented critical elements that can be used for developing and using learning progressions and that can serve as a conceptual basis for future research in science education.
