Teacher Candidates' Risk for Burnout: Results of Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Approaches

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Although there is a large body of research on burnout of experienced teachers at advanced stages of their professional lives, less is known about whether and how students majoring in teacher education are affected. Within two studies, we first identified personality traits and the initial motivation for choosing teacher education as correlates of work-related coping behavior and experience patterns (N=559). In a second study we confirmed that individuals at risk for burnout in their first year of university studies indeed experienced higher levels of emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment two years later (N=220). These results highlight the importance of preventive and interventional counseling for teacher candidates suffering from the increased risk for burnout and burnout symptoms.
