Measuring Economic Competence in Switzerland

Abstract

One important focus of commercial apprenticeship lays on economic competence, which is divided into commercial and economic-civic knowledge and skills with general, domain-linked and domain-specific aspects as well as psychological characteristics. Despite its significance, only little is known about its development during apprenticeship. This paper attempts to bring more insight in this area. New instruments to measure economic competence have been developed and implemented. Not only data about knowledge and skills but also motivation and interest was collected. A total of 1483 apprentices were tested twice. First results show an increase in economic knowledge, but a decrease in motivation and interest. Since commercial apprenticeship is the most often chosen VET in Switzerland this paper contributes importantly to research and practice.
