Abstract

This paper examines our efforts to document the experiences of newcomers of color in a mid-western city of the United States. In particular, the paper looks at experiences communities encountered and our efforts to translate the events through photographs. Recognizing that knowledge of recent newcomers of color has been absent---the photo essay project was created to serve as a curriculum about marginalized communities who are invisible in the curriculum. The findings of the research explore three concepts that may help us examine the relationship between visual spaces and politics: (1) ideal spaces (2) violated spaces (3) cultivated places. Lastly, by examining migrant experiences, the paper examines pedagogical approaches to utilizing photographs to document oppression and agency.
