Distancing or Distinguishing? (Re)visiting Black Immigrants in Higher Education

Abstract

Although there has been an increased interest in diversity within the Black community in U.S. higher education, much of this research has been done in a way that, either explicitly or implicitly, compare Black immigrants and Black natives. Specifically, research done hints at the successes of Black immigrants, while implying that these students are entering college and performing at a considerably higher rate than their Black native counterparts. This scholarly paper seeks to identify the critical issues in extant literature in this area, reconceptualize the ways in which we study Black immigrants in higher education, and provide recommendation for future research on this population.
