Examining the Inclusiveness of Intercollegiate Team Culture and Its Impact on Student-Athlete Cross-Racial Interactions

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Silver Level, Horner

Abstract

As part of its Principles for Conduct of Intercollegiate Athletics, the NCAA states that “It is the responsibility of each member institution to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity among its student-athletes and intercollegiate athletics department staff” (NCAA, 2014, p. 2). Whether individual athletic teams are creating this kind of inclusive environment, however, remains an open question. Using data from the NCAA’s 2010 GOALS survey, this study examines whether intercollegiate athletic teams are promoting a culture of inclusiveness and whether creating such an environment leads to more frequent and more positive student-athlete cross-racial interactions.
